A town of a few thousand people that has hosted, since 1978, the oldest art biennial in the Iberian Peninsula — that's Vila Nova de Cerveira's calling card, and why it's known as the town of the arts.
The 2026 edition is on now
The 24th Cerveira International Art Biennial runs from 18 July to 30 December 2026 under the theme "Borderless Territories" — a reflection on borders as geographical, political and symbolic constructions, staged in a town that lives beside one.
This edition gathers 185 works by artists from 22 countries across four venues, with a tribute to Silvestre Pestana and an associated film festival. If your stay falls before the end of the year, it's an easy outing — the house is twelve minutes away.
Why this exists here
The Biennial was born in 1978, driven by artists who wanted contemporary art outside the big cities — and it stuck. Nearly fifty years on, it's the Alto Minho's flagship cultural event, and it shaped the town: open-air sculpture on roundabouts and gardens, galleries in the old centre, a cultural forum programming all year.
It's also a good excuse for the rest: the castle and old centre, the river, the Saturday market. The art is the way in; the town is the rest of the visit.
Planning the visit
- During the biennial — half a day for the main venues, plus lunch in town. Where to eat →
- Between editions — the open-air sculpture route fills a morning, map in hand (the tourist office has one).
- With kids — mix in the riverside park and the Aquamuseu next door.
Common questions
When is the Cerveira Biennial?
Every two years. The 24th edition runs from 18 July to 30 December 2026, under the theme 'Borderless Territories'.
What about opening hours and tickets?
They change per edition and per venue — the official site (bienaldecerveira.pt) keeps them current. We'd rather give you the right link than stale numbers.
Is it worth visiting outside biennial months?
Yes: the open-air sculptures around town, the galleries and the cultural forum's year-round programme keep the art alive between editions.
