Vila Nova de Cerveira: what to see in the town of the arts

The 1321 castle, the oldest biennial in Iberia, the Saturday market, the river aquarium-museum and the Minho. What to see in Cerveira, 12 minutes from the house.

Portuguese folk pottery at Cerveira's Saturday market: strawberries, cabbage-leaf plates and glazed jugs.

Vila Nova de Cerveira runs along the left bank of the Minho, facing Galicia, twelve minutes from the house. It's small, tidy and unlike its neighbours: the Alto Minho's town of the arts, with a royal castle at its centre and the river sliding past.

The castle and the old centre

The castle was founded by King Dinis in 1321 to hold the Minho frontier. Today it holds the historic centre instead: granite lanes, balconies, café terraces, and the calm of a town whose border stopped being one.

It's an easy morning on foot — from the castle down to the Terreiro, the main square, and on to the river.

The Biennial, and art everywhere

The Cerveira International Art Biennial has run since 1978 — the oldest in the Iberian Peninsula. In biennial years the whole town becomes a gallery; in between, the open-air sculptures and the cultural forum keep the habit going. Our Biennial guide has the details — and the 2026 edition runs until 30 December.

The river: Castelinho park, Aquamuseu and the greenway

By the water, the Castelinho riverside park is the right late afternoon: lawns, walking paths, playgrounds. Next door, the Aquamuseu do Rio Minho shows the river's fish — lampreys, eels, trout — and the fishing culture that's still alive here. A short, reliable hit with families.

The Minho River greenway also starts here — flat, riverside, made for walking and cycling.

The Saturday market

Cerveira's weekly market is one of the Alto Minho's biggest: textiles, shoes, crafts, fruit and vegetables, pottery, plants. Saturdays from early morning, into the late afternoon in summer. On the second Sunday of each month, the arts and antiques fair joins in at Praça da Galiza — good hunting for ceramics and old furniture.

The viewpoint over the river

Above the town, the Cervo viewpoint — with the metal stag that became the county's symbol — opens the whole Minho valley, Galicia on the far bank. A short drive up, best at the end of the day when the light drops onto the river.

Fitting it into a day

  • Morning — market (if Saturday) and the old centre, up to the castle.
  • Lunch — in town. Where to eat →
  • Afternoon — Castelinho and the Aquamuseu with kids, or the Biennial in season.
  • End of day — the Cervo viewpoint, or the greenway back along the river.

Common questions

How long do you need in Vila Nova de Cerveira?

Half a day covers the essentials — castle, old centre, riverside park and the Aquamuseu. If it's a Saturday, add the market morning; in a biennial year, add a few hours for the art.

When is the Cerveira market?

Saturdays, at Praça da Galiza — one of the region's biggest, running from early morning into the late afternoon. There's also a Saturday craft fair at Praça da Galiza, and an arts-and-antiques fair on the second Sunday of each month.

Why is it called the town of the arts?

Because it has hosted the Cerveira International Art Biennial since 1978 — the oldest in the Iberian Peninsula. Between editions, the town keeps its galleries and open-air sculpture.

How far is it from Casa de Santa Eulália?

About twelve minutes by car on a quiet road.
