The dining table at night, candles in candelabras, the red kitchen glowing behind.

The Alto Minho keeps its own calendar, and this stretch of the border concentrates three things worth a trip on their own: Iberia's oldest art biennial, Portugal's oldest rock festival, and one of the north's great weekly markets.

Every week

  • Saturday — the Cerveira market. Hundreds of stalls at Praça da Galiza, from early morning into the late afternoon in summer: textiles, pottery, plants, fruit, tools. Beside it, at Praça da Galiza, the covered craft fair.
  • Second Sunday of the month — arts and antiques. Also at Praça da Galiza: old ceramics, furniture, prints, books. Good hunting for a souvenir that didn't come from a shop.

August: Vilar de Mouros

The Vilar de Mouros Festival is Portugal's oldest rock festival — its first rock edition was in 1971, remembered as the "Portuguese Woodstock". It happens in the village of Vilar de Mouros, Caminha, some twenty minutes from the house.

In 2026 it runs 18–22 August, with Yungblud, Kasabian, Ben Harper, Dropkick Murphys and Body Count on the bill. If your stay overlaps, go; if you're after quiet, book around it — the village fills up.

July to December (biennial years): the Biennial

Every two years, the Cerveira Biennial takes over the town — in 2026, 18 July to 30 December, with 185 works from 22 countries.

Across the river

The border doesn't close the calendar: Tui and Galicia keep their own fiestas and markets, and Valença's Wednesday market has been the Portuguese-Galician trading post for generations. A well-chosen weekend gets you the Saturday market and an afternoon of Biennial — or festival nights in August.
