The Minho river and the Alto Minho

A riverside greenway, river beaches, historic towns and hills — what to do around the house, with real driving times.

A buggy climbing a dirt track through a pine wood at Candemil, two kilometres from the house, kicking up dust.

The Minho is both border and destination. The Minho River greenway links Caminha to Valença through Cerveira, flat and always by the water — as good for walking as for cycling. Lenta river beach, fourteen minutes from the house, is the spot for hot days; the Covas river area on the Coura, ten minutes away, is the hill-country alternative.

The towns do the rest: Valença and its fortress at eighteen minutes, Caminha at the river mouth at twenty-two, Ponte de Lima at half an hour. This is vinho verde country too — with Alvarinho along the Monção–Melgaço axis — and, in season, shad and lamprey from the river. For a full day of nature, the Mezio gate opens the Peneda-Gerês National Park an hour's drive away.
