River and beaches: from Lenta to Moledo, water every day

Lenta river beach 14 minutes away, the Coura river at Covas 10 minutes away, and the Atlantic at Caminha, Moledo and Âncora just past twenty. Where to swim.

Colourful floats on the pool, with the tall hedge and the Minho hills behind.

Few houses get three waters within half an hour: the Minho river, the Coura river and the Atlantic. From Gondar, you choose by temperature, wind, and the age of the swimmers.

The Minho: Lenta river beach

Lenta is the closest — 14 minutes — and the easiest: river sand, calm water, the greenway running right past, and Galicia watching your swims from the far bank.

It's the definitive late-afternoon beach: arrive after the walk, lay the towel down, let the river do the rest.

The Coura: Covas, the hill-country option

The Covas river area on the Coura is about 10 minutes away — mountain water, shade, and a fresh feel even on big days. The right call when the thermometer passes thirty: the Coura comes down from the hills and you can tell.

The ocean: Caminha, Moledo and Âncora

Twenty-something minutes away the Atlantic begins: Caminha at the Minho's mouth, Moledo with Monte Santa Trega across the estuary as a backdrop, and Vila Praia de Âncora with its wide sand and fishing town behind.

These are real ocean beaches — fresh water, waves, kitesurf wind. Perfect escape on hot inland days; for small children, the river is gentler.

How to choose

  • Small children — Lenta or Covas: gentle, shallow near the bank.
  • Very hot day — Covas in the morning (cool), pool in the afternoon.
  • Classic beach day — Moledo or Âncora, with a fish lunch in Caminha. Where to eat →
  • End of day — Lenta, greenway walk included.

Common questions

Which beach is closest to the house?

Lenta river beach on the Minho, about 14 minutes by car — river sand next to the greenway, Galicia on the far bank. The Covas river area on the Coura is even closer (about 10 minutes), with a hill-country feel.

What about ocean beaches?

Caminha is about 22 minutes away; Moledo and Vila Praia de Âncora just beyond. Proper Atlantic beaches — fresh water, wide sand, and the wind surfers thank.

Is the river cold?

It's the Minho: brisk in early summer, mild by August. Between river, Coura and ocean, the differences are part of the fun — and for water guaranteed at your temperature, there's the house pool.

Are beaches supervised?

It varies with the bathing season and changes year to year. Check on-site signage and municipal info before counting on lifeguards, especially outside July and August.
