Two days are enough to understand why the Alto Minho holds people: river, ramparts, ocean and Galicia, all within 40 minutes of Gondar. This is the itinerary we run with first-time friends — pool or pellet stove waiting at the end of each day, depending on the season.
Saturday: Cerveira, the river and Lenta
Morning — the market and the town. Start with Cerveira's market (Saturday is the day), climb to the castle, come down to the Terreiro. In a Biennial year, add a venue or two.
Lunch in Cerveira — our addresses.
Afternoon — the river. The greenway on foot or by bike and a swim at Lenta; with kids, the riverside park and the Aquamuseu fill the afternoon on their own.
End of day — the Cervo viewpoint as the light drops onto the river, then home (12 minutes).
Sunday: the fortress and Galicia
Morning — Valença. The stronghold is walked end to end: gates, bastions, the textile shops, the Minho below.
Cross the bridge. On the other side, Tui: cathedral-fortress, compact old town, tapas before heading back. Two countries in one morning, border unnoticed.
Afternoon — pick your ending:
- Ocean — Caminha, Moledo or Âncora, with the beaches guide in hand.
- Hills — the Covas river area on the Coura, 10 minutes from the house.
- Idleness — the pool, the lawn and the loquat tree. That counts as a plan too.
The weekend's arithmetic
Under two hours of driving in total, zero compulsory tickets (fortress and towns are free), and three waters — river, Coura and ocean — within 25 minutes. The Alto Minho doesn't demand logistics; it demands appetite.
Common questions
What time of year does this itinerary suit?
All year, with adjustments: more river and sea in summer; more towns, fortress and long lunches the rest of the year — the house has a pellet stove and radiators for the evenings.
Do I need a car?
Yes, but barely: everything here sits 10–40 minutes from the house on easy roads. A whole weekend adds up to under two hours of driving.
Can I include Spain without complicating things?
You can — and should. Tui is 20 minutes away and the border is imperceptible: no checks, same currency, and dinner in Spain with your bed in Portugal.
