The Minho has one of northern Portugal's best pieces of leisure infrastructure: a greenway along the Portuguese bank, flat, calm, with Galicia always in view across the water. Between them, the riverside councils have built dozens of kilometres from Caminha to Monção — 13.5 km in Cerveira county alone.
Why it's worth it
Because it's rare: a long route with no cars, no climbs and water beside you. It works for everything — the morning run, the family bike ride, the end-of-day walk — and every stretch exits into a town worth stopping in.
From the house, the natural access is Vila Nova de Cerveira (12 minutes): park by the Castelinho riverside park and pick a direction.
North: Cerveira → Valença
The northern stretch follows the river to Valença, the fortress growing slowly on the horizon. It's the right bike ride: arrive, climb into the stronghold, eat something, ride back.
South: Cerveira → Caminha, beach included
Southwards, the route passes Lenta river beach — river sand, 14 minutes from the house by car — and continues to Caminha, where the Minho meets the Atlantic. This is the family stretch: a short walk plus a swim at Lenta, or the full morning to the river mouth.
The Coastal Camino
This bank is also the Coastal Portuguese Camino: pilgrims cross the county on their way to Santiago, and the greenway meets the route at several points. If you like walking with a purpose, a single stage makes a fine day out — with Valença and Tui as the classic doorway into Galicia.
In a day
- Morning — bike Cerveira → Valença, fortress visit.
- Lunch — in Valença or back in Cerveira. Where to eat →
- Afternoon — a swim at Lenta, or the riverside park with the kids.
Common questions
Is the greenway hard?
No — it's essentially flat, hugging the river, and works for walking as well as cycling. You choose the distance: an hour's stroll or a half-day ride.
Which stretch is best near the house?
The Vila Nova de Cerveira stretch (13.5 km within the county), river alongside, Galicia on the far bank. Lenta river beach sits right on the route — walk and swim in one outing.
Where can I rent bikes?
There are rental and tour operators around Cerveira and Caminha; the offer changes with the season, so check with Cerveira's tourist office or ask us when you book.
Is this the Camino de Santiago?
It crosses it: the Coastal Portuguese Camino runs along this bank of the Minho, and pilgrims and cyclists share the scenery on several stretches.
